The Subscription Trap
Netflix, Spotify, gym membership, cloud storage, meal kits, news sites, software tools... subscriptions are everywhere. And they are quietly draining your wallet.
The Average Subscription Spend
Studies show the average consumer underestimates their subscription spending by 2-3x. Most people guess they spend about $80/month. The reality? $200-$300+ per month for many households.
That is $2,400-$3,600 per year, or $12,000-$18,000 over five years.

The Subscription Audit
Here is how to take control:
- List every subscription — Check bank statements for the last 3 months
- Categorize as essential vs nice-to-have — Be honest
- Check for duplicates — Do you need both Spotify AND Apple Music?
- Calculate the annual cost — Seeing $14.99/month as $180/year changes perspective
- Cancel what you do not use weekly — If you have not used it in 2 weeks, cancel it
The 10% Rule
A healthy subscription budget is no more than 10% of your after-tax income. If you earn $5,000/month after tax, keep subscriptions under $500.
